I called Sonia at home around 8:00pm but no one answered. I left a message on the answering machine and made a mental note to call again later.

The phone rang.

“Hello, Mr. Barnett, it’s Malik.”

He was the last person I expected.

“Remember me saying that we worked to help people who we felt were helping us,” Malik continued.

“I remember,” I responded dryly.

“Well, Reverend Jennings flew out earlier today, destination London. Just thought you might want to know,” he said.

“Thanks,” I said and hung up with the sound of Malik’s voice still ringing in my head. How did he know the Reverend had flown the coup?

The clock at the side of my bed read 12:13am when the phone rang. The voice at the other end belonged to Sonia.

“Yeah baby,” I said fighting sleepiness.

“This is going nowhere, you know that don’t you?” she was agitated and breathing heavily.

“Sonia, believe me, I have been thinking about you. I called and left a message but…”

“Listen Devil,” she said cutting me off, “I’ve heard sob story after sob story for too long. I’m just calling to say I’m sick and tired of it and I deserve better, let’s just forget it. Go and put your time and interest into something you care about.”

She hung up.

Now I was fully awake again. Damn. Maybe Sonia was right, maybe she did deserve better.

My thoughts drifted back to the Reverend Jennings. I made two overseas telephone calls, one to a man named Dave and the other to a man named Munir. Somewhere between my conversation with Sonia and all of the thinking I had done, a decision had emerged. The feeling that drove me now was an almost insatiable urgency combined with an unmistakable adrenaline rush that I had known many times before.

The Reverend was the prey and I was the hunter. At the top of my things to do list I wrote the words ‘airline ticket’ because tomorrow I knew I had a plane to catch.
